A Margarita by Any Other Name

Where did the name of this oh-so-popular cocktail come from? It’s not unusual for cocktails to have multiple stories of origin and the Margarita is no different. In fact, about the only thing that remains the consistent in the stories is the approximate date coinciding with the beginning of WWll – 1939ish.

There’s the one about the head bartender - Pancho Morales, from Tommy’s, Juarez Avenue, Juarez, Mexico. Tommy’s was a popular haunt for soldiers from Fort Bliss. The story is that a lady came to the bar and ordered a Magnolia.

Pancho, a proud man, knew only vaguely what a Magnolia was. He knew only 2 ingredients – Cointreau and lime. Made a lucky guess, added tequila, and the customer loved it! Though, she did say that it was not a Magnolia. Pancho, a quick thinker, said he’d confused the flowers, it was actually a Margarita he’s given her. Pancho posted a sign for Margaritas, the drink caught on, and the rest is history.

Postscript: Margarita was his wife’s name.

Or – Was the Margarita named after 1940s stage and screen star, Rita Hayworth. Doesn’t seem plausible! After all her name was Rita? The actress was doing a show in Tijuana. They say she was a bit of a barfly. And a bartender took a liking for her, creating a new drink just for her. Turns out her real name Margarita Carmen Cansino.

Another cocktail tale is that there was very popular drink, a sour called the Tequila Daisy. It was made from liquor, sugar syrup, and citrus topped with soda water. Along the way Tequila, a native of Mexico, became the liquor. Daisy is the nickname for Margaret, Margarita in Spanish. Exactly why the change happened remains a mystery!
