Used to be, “word-of-mouth” was touted as the best form of advertising! You asked your neighbor where to buy a new car. Your dad told his brother, who was admiring his freshly painted house, about the amazing experience he had at the local paint store. Gushes over the tips they gave and points out the detail on the trim.

True, there were other forms of advertising – billboards, local radio, newspapers, sponsorships, and booths at local events.

Businesses also did “mother-in-law” surveys. They asked people around town what they really wanted in (insert their product or service here). They improved or changed based on local feedback. Because they were a local business. And these were or could be their customers.
