Tequila 101 Lite – 5 Types of Tequila

All tequila is made from Agave, most from Agave Azul, a succulent grown in hot, arid areas like Mexico - since we’re talking about Tequila! The plants are slow to mature giving way to the nickname, century plant.

Blanco or Silver Tequila – The purest and freshest, not distilled or aged. Offers true flavors of agave.

Joven or Gold Tequila – Rare, a Blanco that has been blended with something else.

Reposado Tequila – A mixer aged in oak for two months to a year, used for margaritas and other mixed drinks.

Añejo Tequila – These, like Don Julio 1942, are sipping tequilas aged in French oak casks, whiskey barrels or Cognac barrels for one to three years. Richer in flavor, reviewers overwhelmingly talk about aromas of vanilla and caramel with some agave and oak. Others add dark chocolate, almond, cinnamon, and black pepper. Sweet, the aging rounds out the flavor for a smooth finish. Exquisite after a fine meal!

Extra Añejo Tequila – Aged more than three years and free from other restrictions. Considered high end for true tequila aficionados.
